THE LANGUAGE OF MIND

Today, when the need of unity and mutual understanding in international relations is greater than ever, the problem of diverse languages is recognized as an important factor. Christian Scientists approach this problem by recalling Mary Baker Eddy's words in their textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 414): "The Christian Scientist's argument rests on the Christianly scientific basis of being. The Scripture declares, 'The Lord He is God [good]; there is none else beside Him.' Even so, harmony is universal, and discord is unreal."

As an earnest student of the Bible, the Christian Scientist accepts the scientific conclusion that God is Mind, Spirit, Truth, and Love; that He is the Life and Soul of man, the Principle of his being. God created man in His image and likeness, and this man, the real man, lives forever in eternal harmony and peace. The Bible describes this state of existence by saying that "the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech" (Gen. 11:1). This presents the absolute spiritual fact regarding man and creation as God fashioned them.

The Bible narrative in the eleventh chapter of Genesis proceeds, however, to give in the familiar story of the tower of Babel the evolution of a relative, human concept of mankind. It illustrates the way in which men let themselves be deluded into believing that they themselves are creators. Ignorant of the one Mind, God, and of their true selfhood as children of God, accepting instead the false claim of minds many, false pride and mad ambition drive them to discord and strife. The confusion of languages ensues, according to this narrative, and the human family is broken up into many tribes and nations.
