About six years ago, while enjoying...
About six years ago, while enjoying the fruits of a successful business career with a most promising future, I was suddenly stricken with what the doctors diagnosed as severe coronary thrombosis, a serious condition of the heart. After seventy days in the hospital I was sent home without the slightest gleam of hope from the medical fraternity. Placed on a strict diet and relegated to a life of inactivity, I found my future prospects extremely dark.
Within a few days after my return home Christian Science was presented to me. Although I knew nothing about its teachings, I gladly accepted it, primarily for the reason that there was no other hope. The reading of only a few pages of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy gave me great encouragement. Here was a doctrine which said there was hope, regardless of what the physical senses or medical science had to say. As I read further I found that not only was there hope, but there was also a clear and unqualified promise from God to give mankind health, strength, peace, joy, and an abundance of all good things. Our part in this contract, I discovered, was to love God and keep His commandments. I found that this was the doctrine taught and practiced by the master Metaphysician, Christ Jesus, who proved its efficacy by healing the sick. Realizing that I had found the pearl of great price, I sought the help of a practitioner and earnestly began to learn more about God.
Under the rules of my company I was required to return to the hospital for a checkup at certain intervals. Encouraging reports were immediately forthcoming. Within a month after I had begun the study of Science the doctor informed me that my heart had undergone a decided change for the better. A month later I was informed that my condition was so improved that I could return to duty in a position of lesser responsibility and that I need not return to the hospital for a checkup until I felt so inclined.
