SQUARED AWAY ON OUR TRUE COURSE

To be "squared away" is a nautical term which means to set the sails so the ship will stay before the wind. To stay before the wind is to take sure, direct, and safe course to an intended destination. What human being would not want to be squared away on a safe course toward peace, happiness, and health? Who would not want to know that his course is direct and sure? A sailor must know how to set the sails and what his destination is before he can square away and let the wind take the ship.

Likewise men must know how to set their sails so that they will be taken to the desired destination. They must gain spiritual understanding in order to square themselves away from materiality into the true and safe course of spirituality. This true course, which leads to permanent health and satisfying joy, is attained through the study of Christian Science.

We must begin rightly in order to end rightly. If we rely on matter, we make a bad start. In Christian Science we learn that matter has no origin, no reality—nothing by which we can set our sails. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 262), "The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man's origin." This false sense was described by Jesus when he said to the unbelievers (John 8:44): "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
