HOREB DAY

The meek sheep waited. Nothing threatened
There in the quiet Horeb day.

Moses had turned aside to see
That great sight,
The bush burning and not consuming
In the midst of the flame of fire.

As he watched he heard God speak.
He spoke great things.
He gave the plan of Israel's redeeming,
Told comfortably of the large good land
Flowing with milk and honey,
Defined Himself,
Proclaiming His own great name
"I AM THAT I AM."
He showed the serpent handled
By cognizance of the rod's use.

The meek sheep waited
There in the quiet desert day.
God cared for all, the while He spoke
Of Christly peace and power.

Through clear communion with the cause
Moses beheld divine effect,
A bush burning and not consuming,
Symbol of Love untouched by hate,
Of Principle acting
Despite all mortal despotism.

Shall we not put off awhile
Our little earthly round of task and care
And, trusting, turn aside to see and hear
The spiritually true,
Untouched by error's flame?

So let us unshod, reverent, stand
Upon this healing holy ground
Of timeless Horeb day.
