Christian Science came into my...

Christian Science came into my life many years ago when, as a young woman, I was looking forward to a life of happiness and usefulness in some capacity. However, the time came when I was left alone and was troubled with a recurring condition of lockjaw, from which I had suffered for several years. My mother had taken me to a specialist, who had pronounced the difficulty incurable; and I was advised to live a quiet life, contrary to my desires and expectations.

At this juncture, when things seemed very dark and perplexing, divine Love met my need. A friend who visited me one day told me that she had heard of some people who professed to heal by prayer alone. She said that they were meeting regularly in a small room, and she suggested that we go and hear what they had to say. Out of sheer curiosity I went, but my curiosity was soon changed to a great interest in the hymns and in what was read. The meeting opened with Mrs. Eddy's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 14), which I felt had a healing message for me.

In the weeks following I became so interested in Christian Science that I eventually asked a practitioner for help regarding the physical trouble. Within a week of my first treatment there was a complete healing, and I have never to this day had any further recurrence of lockjaw. I was then very lovingly advised to get the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At that time there were no Christian Science churches on this side of the Atlantic Ocean and therefore no Reading Rooms. But one of our little group had been to Boston, Massachusetts, and had returned with several copies of the textbook, and from her I bought my first copy of the precious book.
