"GENERAL PROGRESS AND DIVINE LOVE"

Whenever the writer, as a young student of Christian Science, came upon the allegory which ends the chapter "Christian Science Practice" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, she would skip through it seemingly uninterested. As her understanding of the truth grew, however, she began really to appreciate and make use of this illustration of the law of God, divine Love, acting upon suppositional material law, which claims to rob us of our health and happiness. She saw that our Leader was truly inspired to give this allegory to us as a constant help in our work for ourselves and others.

In the allegory, often referred to as the trial, when Mortal Man is in the Court of Material Error being tried before a jury of Mortal Minds, Fear is the sheriff. No wonder Mortal Man is condemned to die! When Christian Science comes to his rescue and he is brought before the Court of Spirit, the same witnesses, jurors, and judges who attended the Court of Error are summoned to the bar of Justice and eternal Truth. But here the sheriff's name is Progress, and Mortal Man is found to be innocent, healed.

Who that has experienced healing in Christian Science has not become aware at the same time of a sense of progress, however small, in his understanding of the truth of God and man? As healing takes place, either through the help of a Christian Science practitioner or through one's own study of the Bible and Science and Health, one longs to learn more and more about this wonderful truth which opens an entirely new outlook on life and its many blessed opportunities.
