"NO RIDERS"

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

One often sees commercial trucks on the highways in the United States bearing a windshield placard saying, "No Riders," probably placed there as a protection to the driver and vehicle.

An old definition of the word rider is a "mounted highwayman" or a "freebooter." Does not this give us a hint as to the identity of certain "riders" who might desire to accompany us today on our journey from sense to Soul?

The young student of Christian Science is often faced with certain common practices which are not in keeping with the teachings of the Bible or of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. His ability to resist the temptations they would bring is in direct proportion to his closeness to God and his prayerful determination to uphold the high calling of his church. One of the most common of these temptations calls itself the social drink habit; another calls itself the smoking habit. We need to be alert to these "highwaymen" who would overtake us and rob us of one of the many blessings resulting from the application of our religion, namely, freedom from the bondage to bad habits, such as the use of liquor and tobacco.
