CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND OUR CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY
The exposure, by appointed government committees, of organized crime and its affiliation with politicians; the uncovering of bribery and other corrupt influences operating among civic and government officials; and the treasonable betrayal, by trusted employees, of important national and secret information in various countries, present to every alert Christian Scientist a call to action. The leaven of Truth operative in human consciousness is today evidenced in a moral chemicalization, bringing to the surface hitherto hidden evil agencies of mortal mind.
Speaking of this, Mary Baker Eddy writes as follows in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 102): "The mild forms of animal magnetism are disappearing, and its aggressive features are coming to the front. The looms of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, are every hour weaving webs more complicated and subtle. So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence, and produce the very apathy on the subject which the criminal desires."
A correct understanding of Christian Science will not permit a student to ignore the aggressive claims of evil or to be apathetic in demonstrating their nothingness. It is not surprising that as long as men believe that they have private minds, and permit themselves to be governed by the uncontrolled force of human will, this kind of thinking will find expression in corruption and dishonesty. The Psalmist wrote (Ps. 10:4), "The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts." Christian Science affirms and demonstrates the divine fact that God alone governs all and that whether men acknowledge this fact or not, they cannot escape the control and government of divine Principle.
