TWO IMPORTANT WORDS

Two of the most important words in the English language are "God" and "man." As they are understood in Christian Science, they refer to the one and only infinite God and to man, His perfect, spiritual image and likeness.

The writer sometimes recalls how completely ignorant he was of God and man before becoming interested in Christian Science. Prior to that time he had had not the slightest idea of what God was, where He was, or if there really was a God. To him the word God was meaningless, and the word man was nothing more than a name for a human being, especially a male human being. However, after attending a Christian Science lecture he was aroused to seek a spiritual understanding of God and man.

During his discourse the lecturer had read several passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The writer procured a copy of this book and began to study it. One of the passages that proved especially helpful to him at that time is on page 390 and reads, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." As his understanding of God and man increased through his continued study. supplemented by visits with a Christian Science practitioner, he was promptly restored to health when discordant conditions of various kinds were manifested, including tonsillitis, diphtheria, malaria, a sprained ankle, and pneumonia.
