"O GENTLE PRESENCE, PEACE AND JOY AND POWER"

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Ellen went to the Christian Science Sunday School every Sunday, for she loved to hear and learn the truths of God and man which Mary Baker Eddy discovered and writes about in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Ellen's mother had told her that Mrs. Eddy had been healed by studying the Bible after a very bad accident and that God had revealed the truth to Mrs. Eddy, that is, showed her how she had been healed. She was so grateful for this understanding that she wanted the whole world to know the truth. And today anyone can read all about the truth of God and man in Mrs. Eddy's writings.

Although Ellen was still a little girl, she had learned that God is Love, that God is good, and that He is everywhere all the time. Because she knew that all this is true, she understood that she did not ever have to be afraid or sick. She was a happy little girl, and she liked to sing, especially, "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power," which is the way one of Mrs. Eddy's poems, called "The Mother's Evening Prayer," begins (Poems, p. 4). It has been set to music and is in the Christian Science Hymnal. Ellen did not know all the words, but she hummed the tune and sang the words she knew.
