FROM ANNUAL REPORTS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

Making Our Religion Better Known

Warwickshire, England

During the period under review a special plan for advertising our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in the local press was undertaken. The scarcity of newsprint. which has caused all newspapers, national and local, to be very much reduced in size, has, however, necessitated drastic limitation of the space available for advertising. After many difficulties had been encountered and overcome, a meeting of members of the boards of the Warwickshire churches taking part in the plan was held in the Committee's office, the financial arrangements were agreed upon, and the campaign went forward. I am informed by Reading Room librarians that the results of this effort, judged by loans and sales of Science and Health, were most encouraging.

A violent attack on Christian Science in general, and on our beloved Leader in particular, appeared in a parish magazine of wide circulation. The vicar of the parish in whose magazine the attack was given prominent display was approached by the Committee. When first spoken to by telephone the vicar expressed surprise, saying he had not seen the copy of the magazine containing the article. In the course of the conversation a meeting was arranged. By the time I visited him, he had read the article, and he at once agreed that such an attack should not have been made. After the objectionable points had been discussed and passages from Mrs. Eddy's works disproving the statements had been read to the vicar, he evinced considerable interest. When finally the religious Tenets of Christian Science were read from page 497 of the textbook, he exclaimed: "That is fine, Let me have a copy of those Tenets, and I will see what can be done about having them inserted in a future number of the magazine."
