PERSISTENT EFFORT BRINGS VICTORY

EVERY healing is a victory won over the only enemy that we can ever encounter—the so-called mortal or carnal mind, which the Apostle Paul says "is enmity against God" (Rom. 8:7).

What actually takes place when healing occurs? Christian Science makes plain that health is a divine state of Mind. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 120), "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health." Restoration to health, then, must necessarily take place in the mental realm, not in the physical. It involves the change of one's thinking from a false, material basis to the true, spiritual basis—to a spiritual understanding of God, the only Mind, and of man's relationship to that Mind as its complete and perfect reflection.

What we humanly refer to as healing, we find in Christian Science to be actually but the effect on the body of the restoring of spiritual truth to the human consciousness. The coming of this truth, or Christ-idea, brings the power of God into operation. It routs out of consciousness the fear of and belief in the reality of evil, in anything that is unlike God, good, therefore unlike man; and healing appears. Mrs. Eddy states it more succinctly when she says (ibid., p. 141), "In healing the sick and sinning, Jesus elaborated the fact that the healing effect followed the understanding of the divine Principle and of the Christ-spirit which governed the corporeal Jesus."
