[The paragraphs following are from a report prepared by the chairman of a Reading Room committee.]

Joint Establishment and Maintenance

Truly it has been said, "Mightier than armies is an idea whose time has come," as has been proved in the experience of our committee, representing the three churches in this city which recently established a Christian Science Reading Room in downtown, ground-floor, jointly-maintained premises.

In accordance with the Manual of The Mother Church, each of the three churches maintained its own Reading Room, one being located on the ninth floor of a downtown office building and the other two in church edifices. These rooms were, to all outward appearances, meeting the needs of Christian Scientists who knew where they were located, but we had no Reading Room in this field which was accessible to the general public or would attract strangers.

In July, 1948, a letter was sent out from the Board of Directors of The Mother Church to executive boards of all churches in cities in the United States and Canada in which there were two or more branches, stating in part, "We are writing to ask that you give consideration to the question whether you should within the next few years move your Reading Room to a new location, perhaps a business section . . . and preferably in a ground-floor location."
