ONCE SEEN

To see him risen! Could experience hold
A greater wonder? Many saw him die
And wept, and felt alone, defeated, cold.

Officialdom took pains to seal the lie,
Which Love unsealed. And some, perceiving, rose
Out of their dead beliefs. They rose on high

Themselves, rose from the dead. And none could close
That open door again. The Magdalene
Saw the stone gone. The beauty of it grows

With understanding. After she had seen
And talked with angels, then her thought, ascending,
Began to clarify. Ah, could he mean

"And this is life eternal"? Never ending!
She recognized him. ... That very night
The others found him, in their midst, transcending

All dark belief. And in Truth's living light
The mourned, the loved, came clearly into sight.
