EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

On page 566 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy likens the experiences of the children of Israel which they had on their way out of Egypt to the promised land to a journey from sense to Soul. She explains that all right desires are guided on this journey by the spiritual idea, and that it is a mental experience, involving relinquishment of material thinking and working from the spiritual standpoint of God's allness and the perfection of man. This journey has to be undertaken by everyone sooner or later, and as we read the account of the wanderings of the Israelites in the wilderness, we recognize many of the traits which would seem to impede our own progress.

Before Christian Science came into our lives we may have been accustomed to rely exclusively on the evidence of the material senses and to classify anything which could not be explained from their standpoint as an unsolvable mystery, but the spiritual illumination which this Science brought changed our whole outlook on life. This changed viewpoint always brings with it healing and a wonderful sense of joy. We soon find, however, that we have continually to increase our understanding of the truth and to prove it in our daily lives. As we do so, one very comforthing fact emerges: whatever our experience, God goes with us every step of the way.

A fundamental point in the teaching of Christian Science, as in that of the Bible, is that God is infinite, omnipresent Spirit; that consequently He is everywhere, and that His children, His spiritual creation, can never be separated from Him. This truth concerns the real selfhood of each one of us. Christian Science teaches that the mortal self, which often seems so real, is but the counterfeit of our true self as the reflection of God, Spirit. In Science we also learn that God is Love, and that the secret of our happiness lies in our individual reflection of Love. If we are really intent on the work of reflecting Love, there will be no room for self-pity or fear of the future, for Love, which fills immensity, when reflected will fill our thought with its warmth and glow.
