When Christian Science was first...
When Christian Science was first presented to me, although I was in great need of its healing ministrations I spurned what I thought was its religious teaching, believing that the healing I had heard of were the works of the evil one. Years later I witnessed the healing of a little child stricken with pneumonia. I was in the home of the child's parents at the time and became very indignant because they were doing nothing to relieve the situation, as I thought. The next morning when I inquired about the child and was told that it was fine, I thought, "What a lie." To my utter amazement, however, I found the little one outdoors playing.
The manifestation of the Christ through the absent treatment of a practitioner made a wonderful impression on me. It penetrated the wall of prejudice and inspired me to search for and understand the power underlying such a marvelous healing. Through the study of Christian Science I gained permanent freedom from two diseases—tuberculosis and leakage of the heart—both of which reputable physicians had pronounced incurable.
When I first began the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I was entertaining a great sense of hatred for two people with whom I was in close association. I had not read long in this wonderful book before I realized that I could not get very far while this state of thought existed. I found that love permeated its pages; so I went to work to eradicate from my consciousness all hatred. I began to feel love and compassion for these two people, and at the same time I awoke to find I was perfectly free from my physical difficulties. My husband remarked that if this book could bring such happiness, it surely must be a good one. That was twenty-four years ago, and never has there been the slightest return of the maladies.
