"The public is cordially invited to make use of our Reading Room"

[The paragraphs following are quoted extracts from letters and reports received from Reading Room librarians and committees.]

Our new Reading Room is beautiful, restful, conductive to study; in addition, it is conveniently located on a busy street. For over two years prior to its relocation the librarian and the Reading Room committee worked in every way to promote a better sense of activity, beauty, comfort, and convenience in the premises then occupied. At regular meetings the need of each member for a clearer understanding of the purpose of the Reading Room, its activities, and its place in the Cause of Christian Science was considered.

Improvements were made that added much to the room. The lending library was brought up to date and placed in a conspicuous place with a suitable sign reading "Free Lending Library." Advertisements were placed in local newspapers. Open house was held to acquaint those interested with all the Reading Room had to offer. The hours of the Reading Room were increased. Before long more newcomers were finding their way to its lending library. Soon the supply of periodicals was no longer adequate to meet the growing need, and the standing order had to be increased.

By the end of the second year the sales were thirty-five per cent above those of the previous year. During this period church members as well as Reading Room workers grew into the realization of our need to make the Reading Room truly accessible.
