"THE SEA ROLLED BACK"

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

When the children of Israel, pursued by the storming hordes of Egyptians, berated Moses for leading them out of Egypt, their great leader turned their thoughts away from fear and doubt to God's unfailing care of His own. Through his understanding of the one God as the great I AM, he was enabled to lead them forward in their journeys and was well prepared to show forth before the eyes of men what many might call miracles. His people, not yet spiritually prepared to trust the power of God, demanded a material sign.

Moses had beheld the wonders of His hand on various occasions. But the task of proving to his people the verity, positiveness, and faultless operation of God's law still lay before him. At a time when the people were filled with fear of failure, his devotion to the one Mind was rewarded: the waters of the Red Sea parted and the children of Israel walked over on dry land.

Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 566), "As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides of human fear,—as they were led through the wilderness, walking wearily through the great desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised joy,—so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God." In this passage our Leader shows us that the utilization of the spiritual idea, the truth about God and man, produces a change in human consciousness from confusion to harmony, from stagnation and lack of accomplishment to energy and fruition, from distrust to joyful confidence in God's unlimited ability to preserve and prosper.
