The Hour for Sunday School
Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in Sections 1 and 10 of Article XXIII of the Church Manual, has wisely provided for the democratic self-government of the branches of The Mother Church. Hence, each branch makes its own plans and formulates its own rules for carrying out the Manual provisions for the Sunday School. Situations vary in different localities, and although a church or society may find it helpful to consider the experience of other Churches of Christ, Scientist, or Christian Science Societies, details of Sunday School procedure remain to be worked out through prayer and demonstration in each instance.
The question of the best hour for holding Sunday School is one that for some time has been receiving the thoughtful attention of many Christian Scientists. Many churches and societies hold Sunday School exercises simultaneously with the Sunday morning church services. Others hold them either before or after church. And still others hold two sessions, usually one during the church service for little children so that they may come with their parents, and the other either before or after church for older pupils.
In recent years the plan of holding the entire Sunday School during the church hour has been growing in favor. Parents of little children find it convenient to have the children in Sunday School while the adult members of the family are in church. Also, it has been found that most older boys and girls prefer the church hour for Sunday-School. And families driving from a distance especially favor the plan because it enables the entire family to come to church and Sunday School at one time.
