My first glimpse into the teachings...
My first glimpse into the teachings of Christian Science was in my native country, Finland. It was in the home of one of Finland's great humanitarians and social workers that I had the privilege of spending a part of my girlhood. This great person would quote to me passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but my knowledge of the English language at that time was not sufficient for a further study of this Science.
Some years later, when I was a resident of the United States and had passed through some bitter disappointments, accompanied by much self-pity, I suffered from a nervous breakdown. I tried various therapeutics, diets, and medicines, but found no help in them. Then Christian Science was again brought to my attention. Turning wholeheartedly to the study of the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, with the help of a practitioner, I was liberated from the many fears and the disease, with all its painful phases.
Another early healing was of partial deafness. When I was fifteen, my right ear suddenly closed and started to ache. My family, who knew nothing about Christian Science, took me to a noted specialist. He treated me for a while and then suggested a mastoid operation, but I begged that it be postponed and medical treatment continued, which was agreed to. At times the pain was severe and the ear discharged freely. The medical care was continued more or less constantly through several years by different specialists, who all said that I would never regain hearing in that ear.
