Many years ago a copy of our textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was handed to my mother with the request that she lead it and note its foolishness. The teaching, however, appealed to her, and the reading was continued, with the result that our entire family adopted Christian Science as our way of life. My first contact with a practitioner was made at my mother's request, and I obtained relief from a throat ailment. Later I turned to Science of my own volition. I was in splendid physical condition, but I was far from satisfied with my progress in business and with my moral and mental condition. I had a good position, but was constantly faced with the fear that I would not be able to keep it. The only God I had was my conscience.

I had learned that Christian Science declares that an understanding of God brings health and happiness, so I decided to acquire this knowledge. Almost coincident with this decision, I commenced to go to pieces physically. I became afflicted with a throat condition that made it difficult for me to talk. The situation grew steadily worse, in spite of my earnest study and the help from practitioners. Upon the insistence of relatives I had been examined by one of the best throat specialists in Chicago, who told me he could do nothing to help. This diagnosis left me entirely dependent on Science, so I continued to study and have help.

One morning I awoke with severe pains in my lungs and found myself unable to talk above a whisper. To all appearances my lung condition was consumption, and my vocal cords were paralyzed. I was inactive for a year, then took up some work which required very little talking. About two years with constant help elapsed before my voice improved enough to permit a return to my regular work. From a low of one hundred and thirty pounds I gradually regained my normal weight of two hundred pounds. Years later I was required to pass a physical examination. The examining physician was the head of a tuberculosis sanitarium. After taking two sets of X rays, he said he had never seen a man alive with lungs as badly scarred as mine.
