Christian Science Committees on Publication GUARD OUR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

[From annual reports]

Oregon

The decision by the Portland Area Council of the Campfire Girls to waive the X-ray requirements for summer camp enrollees whose parents register an objection to such requirements on the grounds of religious beliefs, is another evidence of the leavening influence of Truth. Fear-provoked compulsion and regimentation must yield and are yielding to the law of Christ. It is worthy of note that existing Oregon law exempting school children from health instruction and physical examination was a factor in the Campfire decision.

As the Christian Scientists in Oregon hold the line today against medically inspired pressure, they will fortify themselves against tomorrow's threat of aggression. To refuse to submit to such imposition is an act of following our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for it is an act of obedience to her textbook counsel (Science and Health, p. 237): "Children should be taught the Truth-cure, Christian Science, among their first lessons, and kept from discussing or entertaining theories or thoughts about sickness. To prevent the experience of error and its sufferings, keep out of the minds of your children either sinful or diseased thoughts."
