As daughter and sister of medical...
As daughter and sister of medical men, I was brought up in the belief that illness could be healed only through medicine. My own temporary experience as a nurse and laboratory assistant in public hospitals showed me the limitations of ordinary medical practice. The early death of my parents, to whom every known medical remedy was available, shattered further my faith in the practical help of medicine. So it may be that the ground was prepared to receive the seed of Truth.
In 1925 I first heard about Christian Science. What remained in my consciousness were the words: "God is good and ever present" and "Christian Science proves this." Some years later I saw my first healing, an instantaneous one of my then two-and-one-half-year-old son of inflammation of the middle ear. During the night he lay beside me, and I tried to help him by reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. He asked me to turn out the light. I did so, and since I could not continue to read, I thought, "What I am seeking with the help of light ought to be here in darkness also." And I began to realize the ever-presence of God, good. When I had made this simple but scientific fact my own, the child told me that the pains were disappearing. From that time on my aim has been to study Christian Science earnestly and regularly.
In a household which contained three growing children there was plenty of occasion to use this practical religion. Each child in turn experienced healing. At the age of eleven years my daughter suffered from a bad attack of jaundice. It was completely overcome after a struggle of more than a week, with the help of a practitioner.
