From early childhood I was deeply interested in the Bible and religious matters. I joined an orreligious church before I was twelve and was an enthusiastic pupil in the Sunday School until I was fifteen years old.

At that time I developed a distressing bronchial cough, which resulted in sleepless nights, loss of appetite, exhaustion, and depression, and finally I was forced to leave school. Nothing that our kind family physician and a throat specialist did to give me relief helped me in the least, but I rather grew worse.

About four years previous to this, my eldest sister had been healed of a complication of diseases in three days' time under Christian Science treatment. Although the family rejoiced in her release from suffering, no other member took am steps to investigate its teachings. One memorable night, however, this sister spontaneously offered me a copy of The Christian Science Journal which had just been given her at a lecture on Christian Science, and I accepted it gladly. I read only a few testimonies of healing and retired for the night.
