At one time while returning home...
At one time while returning home from a trip West, I turned my ankle. It gave me a great deal of trouble, and I wondered why this should happen, for we had been with Christian Scientists and I had been reading the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and articles from the periodicals. I recalled a statement made by a Christian Science lecturer some time previous: "Never whine over a condition; a why is a whine." Then and there I decided to reverse my thought and use the experience as an opportunity to prove the truth. My husband and I both worked mentally about it, and when he asked, "Are you going to hobble into Sunday School?" I assured him I was not. This was on a Friday night, and when I got out of the car Saturday at noon, the limp was hardly perceptible. Sunday morning I was able to walk into Sunday School entirely free, rejoicing in the healing power of Truth that had been proved through the understanding we had of Christian Science.
One night after retiring I suffered from cramps in my leg, something I had frequently had, but not so severe as this time. After reading from a Sentinel, I turned out the light to go to sleep, thinking that by morning the cramps would be gone. Then I suddenly thought, That is not the way to meet this; so I turned on the light again to resume my reading. I came to a passage that spoke of error being "completely annihilated"; and as I pondered those words, the pain stopped, and it has never returned. It was just as though a light had been turned on in a dark room.
Can I ever express in words my sincere gratitude to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for having the courage to bring the truth to us through Christian Science and for making it available to all the world? My husband and I have passed our sixtieth wedding anniversary, and for forty-seven of them we have had the privilege of Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Katharine L. M. Burns, Baltimore, Maryland.
