LETTERS TO THE PRESS from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Missouri The Star, Kansas City

The report which The Star gave of the special hearing which was held before the Children's Code Committee of the Missouri House of Representatives may have conveyed the impression to many readers that Christian Scientists were on hand seeking the outright defeat of the health laws under consideration. Please permit me therefore to say that the hearing was held for the purpose of presenting amendments to the bills exempting Christian Scientists from those provisions which would infringe upon their constitutional right of religious freedom.

Because Christian Scientists rely upon prayer or spiritual means for healing, they are unalterably opposed to compulsory surgery and medication being forced upon them by the authority of a state statute. Christian Scientists are in no way attempting to interfere with the rights of others who max wish to adopt the compulsory provisions of this legislation, but they do ask exemptions for themselves from any legislation which strikes at the precepts of their religion.
