The president of the great Washington and Lee University, Dr. Francis Pendleton Gains, ... makes a tremendously significant statement when he says:

"For this generation we need to emphasize the essential religious nature of democracy. It cannot have escaped the attention of thoughtful Americans that the leaders of efforts within our own time to supplant democracy have been desperately hostile to religion. A public official in a recent statement summarized correctly what he called 'the central core' of democracy by saying that it is a simple conviction that 'all men are the children of God.'"
