Christian Science was first...

Christian Science was first brought to my attention, when I was a little boy, by relatives who were visiting us. They were students of this Science and earnestly tried to live up to its high ideals. Some mention was made of their religion, but it aroused so much opposition and ridicule from members of my family that there was no further discussion. It had made an impression on me, however, for I saw the beautiful lives these relatives lived and, even as a child, knew they must have a practical, demonstrable religion.

Nearly fifteen years later I attended a Wednesday evening meeting in a Christian Science church and was much impressed. I particularly noted the number of men present, as the midweek prayer meetings to which I was accustomed were attended very largely by women. Aside from casual attendance at the Wednesday evening meetings and Sunday services at this and other Christian Science churches in the community, however, I made no further effort to learn more of this religion.

About two years later I found myself employed in extremely depressing surroundings, engaged in very disagreeable work, for which I received barely livable wages. Soon I had an attack of the grippe, and when I was unable to report for work my position was filled by another. Finding myself in what seemed an utterly hopeless situation from sickness and lack, I determined to find out if Christian Science could be proved practical in my case. I was given a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I began earnestly to read and study this volume. Almost immediately things began to improve. I rapidly regained my health and at once secured a position much more agreeable than the last, at a substantial increase in salary.

As I continued to study, my thought began to open to the idea that it was possible for me to enter the profession I most desired, and very soon the opportunity to do so was presented through means which no human outlining could possibly have contrived. My salary was immediately doubled, carrying with it the opportunity to travel, which I very much desired. As I realized more and more the limitless opportunities of Mind, the way opened later for my entry into an entirely new field, in which I continued for more than twenty-five years.

During all this time many physical healings were experienced, both by my family and by me, for which I am most thankful. I also wish to express my gratitude for the preventive power of Christian Science, because I have been wonderfully protected from untoward events of all kinds, including accidents and epidemics.

For the progress which I have made in the study and application of this teaching, and for the blessing of class instruction, together with the inspiration afforded by the annual association meetings, I am grateful to God and to His faithful messenger, Mrs. Eddy, who unfolded the Christ, Truth, to this age.—George W. Stout, Los Angeles, California.
