THE WISEMEN

"NOW when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying. Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."

To the Wisemen who expectantly followed the "star in the east," was revealed the birthplace of the babe Jesus, who was to become the Exemplar of Truth to the human race. Of this momentous occasion Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Preface to the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"(p. vii): "The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale star to the prophet-shepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ. Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ Jesus, till across a night of error should dawn the morning beams and shine the guiding star of being. The Wisemen were led to behold and to follow this daystar of divine Science, lighting the way to eternal harmony."

In individual experience it is often in a time of seeming darkness that the "daystar of divine Science" first shines on one's pathway, leading him to a comprehension of the truth of real spiritual being which brings release from discord. Truth is always present and operative, ever ready to "make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation;" but to clouded material sense this spiritual light often seems absent or remote. However, if we, like the Wisemen earnestly follow the dawning light of Truth, we shall be brought unfailingly into the radiant presence of the Christ.
