HANG UP YOUR STOCKING!

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Many boys and girls all over the world hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve, confidently expecting to find them full of presents in the morning. Our fathers and mothers, who live so close to us that they know both the useful things and the toys that will make us happy, search in the brightly decorated shops and, according to their means, buy or make for us the very best that they can with which to fill our stockings.

Usually in our stockings we find many things which we have asked for. But there are also things which we never thought of, knew about, or realized that we needed—lovely surprise packets so cleverly and gaily wrapped that we cannot guess what is inside. These packets are fun, and usually we hold our breath as we undo them, and give a shout of joy when at last we find the present. And when we get over the first excitement, we thank our mothers and fathers again and again for being so good to us.

God, we learn in Christian Science, is our real Father-Mother. And because He is Mind, He knows what we most need. God is Love. He loves us so much that He bestows all good on us. And God is omnipotent. This is most important, because it means that He is completely powerful—that there is nothing good that He cannot do or cannot give to His children, because they reflect Him. Everything belongs to Him, and like the father in Jesus' story of the prodigal son. God is always saying to us, "Son, thou art ever with me and all that I have is thine."
