Over seven years ago, when I...

Over seven years ago, when I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown brought on by excessive dieting to lose weight. Christian Science was presented to me by a voice teacher. After a doctor had stated that he could do nothing for me but give me sedatives, I told my predicament to the teacher, whereupon he advised me to try Christian Science. I called on a practitioner, who was very kind. When I told her my fear of food and my belief that because of excessive dieting I could no longer digest food, she explained to me that God, not matter, is my Life. She read to me from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy these words (p. 413): "Mind regulates the condition of the stomach, bowels, and food, the temperature of children and of men, and matter does not." When I left the practitioner I was healed, and I prayed that I might hold on to this truth I had found. Persistent study of the textbook and the Lesson-Sermons followed, and many faults of character were overcome. Winter-long colds vanished from my experience, as did nervousness and indigestion. Impulsiveness, impatience, and the tendency to be temperamental have been overcome to a great extent through the application of Christian Science.

My career as a singer and teacher of voice has improved immeasurably as lack and limitation have been expelled from thought. In my teaching, the beautiful lines on page 307 of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy, "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies," have often enabled me to realize that it is the application of the truths of Christian Science and the attraction of Spirit which supply my daily need, not persons in the form of pupils.

During the upheaval and confusion of the past war, when many young people were confronted with the temptation of hastily choosing a lifetime partner, through the loving help of a practitioner I was kept from yielding to false attraction and mesmerism. Christian Science is teaching me the true basis for any decision—the completeness of man as God's image and likeness. Never shall I forget this practitioner's words quoted from the Bible (Prov. 3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." She also quoted the words of Christ Jesus, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matt. 6:21). As I studied the definition of God on page 465 of Science and Health, I began to realize that my treasure was not in matter but in the kingdom of God, which I must learn to seek with all my heart.
