The Qualities of Spirit versus Self-Expression

"Self-Expression" is a word which is often used in modern parlance among individuals and nations, and indicates a natural desire for greater fulfillment and success in life.

The desire for self-expression is fundamental in the human mind. The first steps taken by a little child are the unstudied effort towards such achievement. As the child grows towards young manhood or womanhood, with an ever-widening realization of the possibilities open to him, he consciously claims his right to them, and directs his energies to their realization.

Often young people who are ignorant of man's spiritual birthright of true dominion feel the clamor of the false sense of self for expression. This sense of self may demand what it cannot receive. Feeling itself denied of that which seems desirable, it claims what it wants as a right, doing this often aggressively, sometimes selfishly. Some parents have grieved over the sudden change in their children from loving confidence and trust to a spirit of assertive independence.
