On Upward Wing

The aviator points his plane
For lofty flight through clouds and rain;
A gray, forbidding sky is spread
Across that pathless space ahead,
And bitter blasts with savage stings
Beat on his upward-soaring wings.

To wisdom, and to skill and power,
The plane responds, and in the hour
Transcends the tumult of the storm
To reach the heights, sun-gold and warm,
Where far horizons, blue and bright,
Encircle all in calm and light.

God gives man faith and confidence
To overcome false mortal sense,
And mount above the dark distress
Of earth-born fear that would depress
The thoughts ascending strong and clear
Into Truth's holy atmosphere.
