"The Lord is my shepherd" (Ps. 23:1).... No utterance of man's lips has got nearer to the human heart than this Psalm. It has woven itself into the experience of kings and peasants alike. Mothers have taught it to the children at their knees; soldiers have chanted it as they faced the terror of the battle; statesmen have found expression through its words in times of national crisis....

There is nothing in the world more wonderful than this Psalm. For three thousand years it has expressed for men deep things for which they could never have found words of their own. For three thousand years it has flowed through human hearts like a bright healing river, making flowers spring and trees blossom as it passed....
