Christian Science was first introduced...

Christian Science was first introduced to me some years before I was ready to receive its healing truth. At that time I was a heavy smoker and also indulged in intoxicants.

Eventually I felt impelled to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meetings and the Sunday services, accompanied by my wife. The habits I have mentioned continued for some little time after this. One day, while reading our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I saw clearly that certain habits and beliefs I had been entertaining were "false gods," and that in indulging them I was daily breaking the First Commandment. I did not specifically couple this thought with either liquor or tobacco. Within a few days, however, I realized that I had not taken an intoxicating drink since the day I saw the truth about my so-called habits, and that I had lost all desire to do so. Almost immediately afterwards I lost the desire to smoke. I am particularly grateful for these healings because I feel it was the thought of giving up smoking and drinking which had prevented me from being an active Christian Scientist.

I am grateful too for the help Christian Science is to my wife and me in connection with our children. Shortly after my healings our daughter, then three years old, shut her hand in a drawer while she was playing with another child. I ran to assist her, and found it necessary to ease the drawer out in order to release the child's fingers. While I was doing this I declared that she was God's child, His perfect reflection, and that no harm could come to her. On releasing the child's fingers I could not help noticing that a large blood blister had been raised on one finger. I refused to accept the testimony of my eyes and continued to declare the truth. When the child was bathed that night, all sign of the blister had disappeared and her hand was absolutely unmarked.
