Christian Science Committee on Publication for Texas Reports

Respect for Christian Science and its Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has increased, as evidenced during the past year by fewer adverse public statements. Only one unfavorable criticism was published in the secular press which warranted a reply. This appeared in a letter printed in one of the leading newspapers in the state, and seemed to arise from ignorance rather than from any deliberate attack. The reply submitted to the editor was published at once.

In a psychology class in one of the universities, hypnotism and waking suggestions were the subjects of discussion, and the professor was performing experiments. He became displeased with one member of the class because he was unable to perform the experiment on her. Later he asked if there were any Christian Scientists in the class, and when this student and one other member raised their hands, he made remarks derogatory to their religion and recommended that they read a certain book which is antagonistic to Christian Science. A local Christian Scientist was requested to call on the professor. The interview was most friendly, and he agreed to read both the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and Dr. Powell's biography of Mrs. Eddy, admitting that he should not have made statements in his classroom in criticism of anyone's religion.

An objectionable reference to Christian Science and Mrs. Eddy appeared in a quarterly published by a theological school in the state. A local Assistant Committee called on the faculty member who wrote the article and reported that he had been kindly received and that the visit had resulted in the professor's obtaining a better understanding and appreciation of Christian Science.
