In Whose Name?

To Christian Scientists has been given the privilege of presenting to the world the truth about God, the great First Cause, and His creation, for Christian Science fully demonstrated proves itself to be the answer to that riddle of the universe, "What is truth?" Christian Science then may never be regarded as merely another Protestant sect, another religious organization to be carried on by well-ordered human ways and means. Rather is it the transcendent revelation of the true nature of Mind and its universe of ideas, God and man in His image and likeness. What an exalted purpose and joyous privilege devolves upon each student of Christian Science, no matter where or what his position may seem to be! An important question then comes to each one of us: "In whose name do we come presenting the gospel of Truth? In the name of Principle or person?"

The tendency of the human mind is to follow person, the one most pleasing, the one with great eloquence or novel ways of presenting personal interpretations, rather than undeviating Principle in impersonal, spiritual power. Jesus, the master Christian Scientist, recognized this. As recorded in the fifth chapter of John he said, "I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive."

No one was more keenly aware of the danger to his mission of coming in his own personal name. This was true also of Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science and in the name of Principle gave it to the world. On page 153 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" she rebukes those who were sending flowers to needy ones in her name, saying, "Now, if these kind hearts will only do this in Christ's name, the power of Truth and Love will fulfil the law in righteousness." Even in such seemingly small ways did our Leader make sure that whatever was done was done in the name of Love and not of person.
