Magnify the Lord
Of certain Biblical characters who experienced healing and increased understanding it was said that they desired to "magnify the Lord." The Psalmist, joyous in his desire to glorify God, called upon all to join him (Ps. 34:3): "O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together." Mary, discerning through her uplifted consciousness the fatherhood of God, exclaimed (Luke 1:46), "My soul doth magnify the Lord."
To magnify is to focus light in such a way that an object appears to be enlarged and may be seen more clearly. This, then, is what these spiritually enlightened individuals were doing. They were magnifying God enlarging their sense of good by dwelling upon it and seeking to understand its nature. Today there are many temptations to do the opposite, to magnify error. Newspapers, magazines, movies, radio programs, gossip, and public lectures are often concerned with some phase of error upon which they desire to focus attention. Often, such errors claim to be our thoughts in either large or small degree.
The writer realized this when she began to suffer from defective vision. She had done much reading over a period of several years, and at the time was working with motion pictures, where considerable use of her eyes was necessary. Although in her mental work she was striving to handle the problem scientifically, no appreciable progress was made. Finally, her superiors became aware of her difficulties, and, since her efficiency was impaired, they insisted that she consult an oculist. This she did, but he was unable to diagnose her difficulty, since it seemed to have various manifestations at different times, occasional farsightedness alternating with nearsightedness and distorted images. She was told she would have to wait for treatment until certain symptoms became more definite. This she realized gave her further opportunity to handle the problem in Science.
