"Let thy garments be always white"

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 267): "The robes of Spirit are 'white and glistering,' like the raiment of Christ. Even in this world, therefore, 'let thy garments be always white.'" In the Bible the word "white" is often used symbolically for purity. This attribute of Spirit illumines human consciousness with the light of divine Mind, and brings to this consciousness a radiance which blots out the mists and darkness of earth's shadows. The Christian Scientist whose consciousness is imbued, or clothed, with the pure qualities of the Christ, becomes a potent agent for the accomplishment of God's purpose, in the home, in business, in the church, the community, and in world affairs.

It should be of interest to the student of Christian Science that the word "purity" implies freedom from any defilement of inconsistency or weakness. To put on the garments of purity means, therefore, to be consistent, true to Truth, in thought and deed. The blessings of Christian Science come in abundance to those who seek Truth through the undivided garment of consistency, through obedience to the seventh commandment (Ex. 20:14), "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

To adulterate is to corrupt or to debase, and therefore to fall away from the absolute truth of the Word. To think or speak the right and do what is wrong is to adulterate the truth. To try to mix Spirit with matter in healing; to proclaim the omnipotence and omnipresence of Love, and hate one's fellow man; to pray for meekness and righteousness, but permit mad ambition and selfishness to hold sway—these are infractions of the commandment which calls for the exercise of purity in daily living. Only through mental and spiritual consistency can one enter into the bridal chamber of Truth and Love, and partake of the fruits of Spirit.
