Refusing to Accept Limitation

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

Jean was a college student with a good college record; but her oral reports were poor. She did not feel at ease when called upon to speak at length in public, and it looked as if on this account she might lose her high rating.

Here Christian Science came to the rescue. She knew this Science healed sickness, so why should it not heal fear and limitation? Jean felt that the difficulty was really a challenge to see what her understanding of Christian Science could do. She was familiar with the definition of "intelligence" which Mary Baker Eddy gives in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 588): "Intelligence. Substance; self-existent and eternal Mind; that which is never unconscious nor limited." She saw that if divine intelligence is not limited, it is not possible for its expression to be limited. It was therefore necessary for her to get the false sense of herself out of the way, surrender the fear, and allow the one Mind, God, to govern and control her.

The biggest test of all came at examination time, when she had to appear before a board of ten examiners for her honors rating. She clung to the verse in II Timothy (1:7), "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." She had devoted many prayerful hours to the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, and when the appointed time came she felt reassured that her preparation had been faithful.
