Overcoming Material Beliefs

In order to demonstrate the teachings of Christian Science it is necessary to accept as a fundamental truth the fact that God is infinite Spirit, Love, the only cause and creator. As we reason from this basis we realize that matter, with its discords and limitations, must be a belief or illusion, without entity or reality. Jesus taught this great truth, though it was little understood by his disciples. He said (John 6:63), "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."

In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes this remarkable statement (p. 278): "Divine metaphysics explains away matter." This confident assertion is so far-reaching in its implications that it may seem incredible to the human mind. However, Christian Science declares this human mind to be a counterfeit of the one all-inclusive Mind or divine intelligence called God.

Early in the book of Genesis we find the statement that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Since God is Spirit, Mind, man, the image of Mind, is properly defined in Science as the idea of Mind. No mental darkness can prevent God's idea from reflecting Him. but we shall never understand this eternal verity while holding to the belief that matter has substance or reality. Indeed, matter, with all its imperfections, must be recognized as a false concept.
