Putting First Things First

Children, as well as adults, desire proof as to the soundness and beneficence of an adventure before engaging in it. They want clear, convincing answers, backed by proof, to their questions, "Why do I have to attend Sunday school?" and, "Why should I place God first in my life?" Like the Preacher, in Ecclesiastes (2:3), they too are searching that they may see what is "that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life."

But where is this proof to be found which will convince a child that he wants God first and always? The answer is that it should be found in the home, the school, the Sunday school, and the church. Are parents proving to children that seeking first the kingdom of God brings enduring riches, happiness, and peace?

Many are familiar with the conversation which took place in Bethany at the home of Martha and Mary, where Jesus rebuked the former's needless care and troubled thought about many things. He stated plainly (Luke 10:42), "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
