After being away from office...
After being away from office work for several years because of a breakdown, I was, with the help of a faithful Christian Science practitioner, sufficiently restored to take my place again in the business world. I was not, however, able to give the high quality of service I had formerly maintained. Through complete reliance on Truth I was guided to take a position as a stenographer for one who was willing to be patient with my efforts. Because the employer was building a new business, and I was not in top form, the salary was small.
I knew that whatever adjustment was necessary, I should have to make, not only because I was the employee, but also because I was the one endeavoring to prove the efficacy of Christian Science to meet every need. But our beloved Leader assures us (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
Apparently, I had lost all interest in business, but I found that as my thoughts dwelt more on proving the truth than on the difficulties presenting themselves, this necessary interest in the work became an active part of my thinking. With much help and encouragement from the practitioner, freedom from self-condemnation and from the fear of being unable to hold the position was realized, confidence was regained, a better sense of health was established, and the quality of my work improved greatly. Things went along so smoothly for some time that I thought the adjustment had been made, but one day a sudden friction over nothing of moment showed me that further correction in my thinking was needed. I entertained hurt feelings for several weeks, which hindered the clearing up of the misunderstanding.
