Reading Room Notes

The Sentinel of May 29, 1943, carried an invitation to members of The Mother Church, and particularly librarians, to contribute, from time to time, helpful, healing experiences in our Reading Rooms. The invitation still stands, and contributions should be sent to the Journal and Sentinel Editorial Department. The following are excerpts from reports received from Reading Room librarians.

One morning I received a letter to call on a girl in the county prison. She wanted to purchase a Bible and a copy of Science and Health, and also to relate her problem. As only relatives are permitted in the prison, I did not see her the first day, but the kindly sheriff said he would have a talk with her and see if she were worthy, and if so, he would grant an interview. The next day in the reception room, with a matron present, she poured forth her problem.

She had become separated from her husband and her baby through domestic problems, and was in a strange city without friends or funds. The only way out she could think of was suicide. After being detained on this charge she thought of a friend who had given her a copy of The Christian Science Journal, and had advised her, should she ever be in trouble, to call on a Christian Science practitioner or go to the Reading Room.
