Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Wartime Activities

[From the Christian Science Wartime Committee in the United Kingdom]

In one district refugees from Europe have been discovered suffering silently and heroically, afraid to ask for relief lest they be misjudged. One Polish family had witnessed the shooting in Poland of the father and husband. Just the very thing in garments was waiting to supply their needs, even to farm boots and a big woolen cape, which was very much needed by the mother. The freedom from restraint, the joy and gratitude expressed when they found that they had nothing to pay for these comforts, were most touching to behold. They had to be assured that it was right for them to accept this relief, and the last thing that rendered them speechless with surprise was the message on a facecloth made by someone in Australia, "This was made for you."

After trying several places and interviewing many people in an attempt to obtain some warm clothing for the seamen in his ship, a Norwegian officer inquired in a Christian Science Rest Room for the Forces if help could be given. He was sent to the Almoner, who was able to give him enough second-hand clothing to meet the pressing needs of his men. He was most grateful, and on being asked why he had come to us, replied, "I belong to a Christian Science family, and I have been getting regular parcels of literature for some time." The need now was to get the things quickly because the ship was sailing in a few hours. When he left, the officer said: "It has been a stone on my heart to see these men so poorly clad; now you have taken that stone from my heart, and I feel much warmer myself. Thank you very much."
