It is with humble gratitude that I desire to tell of an experience that came to me on June 15, 1936.

At that time I was working a lease on a gold mine in partnership with one of my nephews. We had just installed an electric underground hoist on a winze in the tunnel level one hundred and fifty feet inside the tunnel portal. The electrical connections had been made by a man who we had every reason to believe understood how to make them. This, however, proved to be incorrect.

We fired a round of shots in the winze, or shaft, at noon. When I re-entered the mine and was in the act of passing tools to my partner, my left hand came in contact with the steel bucket that was used to hoist ore and waste. The instant my hand touched the bucket, I stiffened, giving just a little gasp, which my partner fortunately heard. As he came up the ladder in front of where I was standing, I tried to tell him not to touch me, but could not utter a sound. He understood what was wrong and ran for the switches, which were located outside the tunnel portal. I saw the lights go out when he threw the light switch. The light wire carried one hundred and ten volts, and this switch was some fifty feet from the tunnel portal, or a distance of two hundred feet from the winze. There was, however no release for me.
