About twenty-three years ago...
About twenty-three years ago my testimony was published in The Christian Science Journal. That was soon after I had taken up the study of Christian Science and had experienced a wonderful healing of influenza. It seemed miraculous to me then, but now I know it was just natural and beautiful. I became interested in Christian Science through the example of a business friend. I had never known such a lovely character, and soon became very much attached to her through the love she reflected toward all with whom she came in contact.
At the time I was wearing spectacles, which I had worn since I was at school and had been told always to wear. But I felt that if I was going to be a Christian Scientist I must discard them. I remember asking a practitioner if it was too soon to take them off, for I had been interested such a short time, and she replied. "It is never too soon to reject a lie." I discarded them the next day and felt very happy about it, and have never needed to wear them since.
Christian Science has been a constant help to me through the years and has never failed. Although I have many times failed to measure up to its high standard. I have always been glad to retrace my steps and begin again, and the daily overcoming of trivial difficulties led to the solving of greater problems. I am grateful for the gradual overcoming of faults of character which had caused me much unhappiness and which I had tried to overcome before I knew of Christian Science. I do not think anyone could have been more fearful than I was until I learned that the testimony of the material senses is never true and has no power to rob us of our peace and joy. I now look back at the silly fears that tormented me, just long enough to be grateful for the overcoming of them.
