Your Army and Mine
Why , after two thousand years of Christianity, should there be a warring world? All who love mankind, who love tolerance, liberty, and an opportunity for self-expression, should ask this grave question of themselves.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 254) Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this statement: "God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won." A state of conflict arises when one believes that materialism can dominate God's universe and take possession of man.
One day assuredly the Biblical promise will be realized and the wolf will dwell with the lamb. Then those characteristics which make individuals and nations aggressive and destructive will be replaced with brotherly love and the honest desire to construct a better world in which to live. In the meantime, as humanity approximates the correct understanding of God as infinite Love, those nations which are fighting for freedom from tyranny will rely more completely for their protection upon Him. Our Leader writes in our textbook (p. 321), "The serpent, evil, under wisdom's bidding, was destroyed through understanding divine Science, and this proof was a staff upon which to lean." It is a cause for gratitude that miraculous rescues from dangers of many sorts, of which we read in Holy Writ, are again being performed through the understanding of God as ever present.
