Sixteen years ago I was healed...
Sixteen years ago I was healed of the smoking habit through Christian Science.
I attended a Christian Science Sunday School from an early age, but because of circumstances I did not continue to attend, and became a heavy smoker before I was twenty. There were, however, many lessons I had learned in Sunday school which I did not forget, especially "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468), the truth of which I used on many occasions. When Christian Science was again presented to me, I eagerly read the textbook, for it seemed like a long-lost friend.
I was disturbed, however, when I found references which offered me little comfort in regard to the use of tobacco. After months had elapsed, slowly the thought took root in my consciousness: You cannot go on in your study of Science and smoke. When I realized what had happened to me, I said, "If it requires no effort on my part. I am willing." Immediately tobacco became less tasteful to me, and presently I had given it up. But within three days the temptation to smoke was so forcibly present that I resumed the habit. Shortly thereafter I again gave it up. Again came the temptation to smoke, and again I resumed the habit. It seemed as if I were accomplishing nothing, yet this was not the case. I knew that I did not really want to smoke, for I felt clean when I gave it up, and ashamed when I went back to it. Also, little by little, the specific difference between exercising will power and taking a stand for Truth was becoming apparent to me.
