Three years ago, while I was...
Three years ago, while I was serving in a Christian Science Reading Room, a picture of The Mother Church and the architect's drawing of the Publishing House were reframed. Their new setting awakened in me an interest in and appreciation of their beauty. For the first time, I contemplated with awe and gratitude our beloved Leader's extraordinary vision and her amazing accomplishment in presenting Christian Science for the benefit of all mankind. Thereupon, I decided to acquaint myself more thoroughly with the history of The Mother Church. Mrs. Eddy's Prose Works, "Historical and Biographical Papers" by Clifford P. Smith, and the use of the Concordances to our Leader's writings opened my thought to a realization of the magnitude of Mrs. Eddy's work, struggle, and sacrifice to bring all this to us.
It is impossible to tell how long I was intent on trying to understand Mrs. Eddy's vision, but it was during this study that trouble started with my glasses, which I had worn since high school days. They fell off while I was dressing, which seemed unusual at the time, because they had been so carefully fitted that only real carelessness could dislodge them. They were repaired. The following week, while I was on the roof of our apartment house, my glasses were carried away by the wind, so suddenly that I was unconscious of the fact until I had returned indoors. My husband and I made a diligent search, but there was no trace of them anywhere. For an hour or so I tried to do without glasses, but then, believing I was using will power, it seemed wise to carry on with a substitute pair. In just a few days, these fell off; the lenses were intact but the frame had sprung, making them useless. Although I knew then what this meant, still, since we were going out, I asked my husband to fix them. Ten minutes after our return, off they popped again, and this time the frame had not only sprung but cracked. At this point I put away self-will, fear, and doubt, and knew that I must trust divine Love.
It was a wonderful experience, for while I could not see anything beyond three feet, every day the mist lifted a little and every day the daily Bible verse in the Monitor gave me needed encouragement and faith in the power of Spirit. The healing took approximately six months, and in all this time only two intimate friends appeared to notice. This, too, was another proof of the protecting power of our Father-Mother God.
